Jarell made a face fifteen minutes later when Ryan dumped him on the bed and climbed out. “Ryan, we do need to talk.”

“I need to shower.” He yanked open the bathroom door.

“You can’t wash me off you, jackass,” he screamed. “You’re mine, damn it!”

Ryan grunted. He wasn’t trying to wash the fresh ice and spruce scent away. His panther was wallowing in it and the man didn’t really mind it. It was arousing and comforting.

Jarell got to his feet and discarded his tattered clothing. He searched Ryan’s dresser and yanked out a T-shirt, and went to the closet for pants. Ryan was taller, but not much bigger through the hips, so the pants should fit fine.

He headed into the bathroom to clean up. “I’m borrowing some of your clothes.” He rolled his eyes when he got no reply.

When Ryan emerged from the bathroom a few minutes later, Jarell sat on the single chair in the room, typing in a message to his boss’s inquiries.

“Who let you in?”

“Some guard,” Jarell told him, bristling at the chill in Ryan’s voice. “He told me to tell you to call him.”

“You should have told me that first,” Ryan said coolly and grabbed his cell.

“Why? Voss was there talking to him. He said to let me in before I turned into a tearful queen. I take exception to that.” He sniffed.

Ryan cocked a brow at him. “Hey, who let the boy in?”

Jarell watched his face tighten and Ryan grunted. He could hear the man repeating pretty much what Jarell had just said.

“Yeah, enough,” he said when the man spoke again. “We’ll talk once I’ve sent him on his way.”

“You’re not sending me on my way, Ryan,” Jarell told him. “You’re going to get your ass ready to go.”

“Go where?” he demanded, throwing the younger man a hard look. “I don’t answer to you or the feds.”

“We’re going over to the hotel to go through Goldman’s stuff.”

“You go,” he answered. “I have things to do.”

“Ryan look, I know you’re mad, but they think you did this,” Jarell said softly.

“So do you,” Ryan muttered.

Jarell studied him. “I don’t know if you did it, and I’m not asking. The issue is handling the aftermath.”

“Where was he attacked?”

“The federal building.”

“Voss told me to stay away until I could sweet-talk you into checking out the office,” he said.

Jarell pushed to his feet. “You don’t have to sweet- talk me into anything, Ryan,” he replied softly. “I came here to talk to you about that, but about something more important, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t mean to sound callous. Goldman didn’t deserve to be attacked by shifters.”

“You know for a fact it was shifters?”

He shook his head. “No. I—don’t sidetrack me. I need to say this now before things go any further.”

Ryan studied him as he leaned against the dresser. “Spit it out, then.”

He pushed out a breath. “Last week I started to, umm—I felt sick and I’m not sure, but I think it’s because—”

“Is this like a state of the union address or something?” Ryan cut in irritation in his eyes.
